Teaching guide

What students learn

Create and use grid reference systems with directions to locate and describe positions and pathways.

How to teach it

Plot and read points as (across, up), x before y, starting from the origin. Extend to four quadrants and describe moves and reflections.

Worked example
A point is at (3, 2). Move it 5 right and 5 up. Write the new coordinates.
Answer: (8, 7)
Why: x: 3 + 5 = 8; y: 2 + 5 = 7

Generated and checked in code, so it is correct.

Watch out for

Reversing the coordinates (up before across) and mis-signing points in the negative quadrants.
