Early finisher activities
Something worthwhile for the students who finish first, without you stopping to plan it. Each year band below has maths challenge cards with computed answers, a tray's worth of printable puzzle and logic sheets, and self-checking tools, chosen for what that age can do on their own.
Why a planned early finisher tray helps
Students finish at different speeds in every lesson. Without a plan, the ones who finish first either sit idle, distract others, or get handed more of the same sums, which teaches them that finishing quickly earns extra work. A tray of puzzles and challenge cards turns that time into extension: logic, patterns and multi-step problems that ask for a different kind of thinking.
The end of term is when this matters most, as routines loosen and classes finish tasks at very different rates. Pair the tray with a daily maths review for the start of the lesson, or with the Sudoku and colour by number tools, which check themselves.
Frequently asked questions
What are early finisher activities?
Early finisher (or fast finisher) activities are short, independent tasks for students who finish class work before the rest of the group. Good ones need no explanation, check themselves or have one right answer, and stretch thinking rather than repeating work the student has already done.
Are these activities free?
Yes. Every puzzle sheet, tool and set of challenge cards here is free to print with no login.
How are the maths answers checked?
The maths challenge cards come from ChalkBee's procedural generators, which compute every answer in code, so the answer page is never wrong.
