What is the New Zealand Curriculum?
The New Zealand Curriculum is the national framework for what children learn in English-medium state schools. Primary schooling runs from Year 1 (age 5) to Year 8 (age 12), and progress is described in curriculum levels rather than year-by-year grades, with Levels 1 to 4 spanning the primary years. The refreshed maths and statistics learning area sets out number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics, with a strong emphasis on number knowledge in the early years. Because our library is US-grade-labelled, each NZ year is mapped to the closest grade by age, Year 1 sits near Kindergarten and Year 8 near Grade 7.
