What is Victorian Modern Cursive?

Victorian Modern Cursive (often called VMC) is the handwriting style used in Victoria, and the same family of letters is used in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Beginners start with a print form whose letters already have the shape of the joined style, so the move to cursive is small.

ChalkBee prints it with Edu VIC WA NT Beginner, plus the dotted and arrow versions from the same Google font family, which is the progression many teachers use: follow the arrows, trace the dots, then write independently.

Some Victorian schools choose a different style from VMC, so if your school uses another font, switch the Style menu on any sheet.

How it is usually taught

  • Prep (Pre-primary in WA, Transition in the NT) to Year 2: beginner print letters in the VMC shape.
  • Middle primary: joining letters into Victorian Modern Cursive.
  • Schools set their own timing, so check your school's handwriting plan.

How to make VIC Modern Cursive practice sheets

  1. Start with letters in Foundation (often called Prep) or Pre-primary or Transition: open the letters sheet and type just the letters you are teaching this week (for example the c-family: c a d g o q), or leave it blank for the whole alphabet.
  2. Move to words once letters sit on the line: the words sheet takes up to five of your spelling or sight words.
  3. Copy sentences for spacing and punctuation with the sentences sheet; type your own, one per line.
  4. Print name tracing for each child in the same style, so the name on their book matches the letters on the wall.

Keep sessions short and frequent: a few minutes of careful letter formation every day does more than one long page a week. Watch where each letter starts, since a wrong starting point is much harder to fix later than untidy letters.

Which states use Victorian Modern Cursive?

Victorian Modern Cursive is the school handwriting style in Victoria and Western Australia and Northern Territory. Individual schools can choose another style, so it is worth checking your school's handwriting plan.
