Grade 2: Multiplication

Warm up with a quick recall on the board. Build multiplication as equal groups and arrays, then skip counting, then recall of facts. Show that the array shows why a × b = b × a.

Multiplication is repeated addition of equal groups. Fluency with the times tables is the foundation for fractions, division and most later maths. Model the method clearly, thinking aloud:

• Begin with equal groups and arrays so the meaning is clear.
• Connect multiplication to repeated addition (3 x 4 = 4 + 4 + 4).
• Drill one times table at a time to automatic recall, then mix tables.
• Move to two-digit by one-digit, then long multiplication.

Do the first few questions of the practice worksheet together, one child explaining each step. Check for understanding before releasing the class to work alone.

Students complete the worksheet independently. Hand out the three difficulty levels below so every child works at the right stretch.

Circulate and look for these, they are the usual sticking points:

• Memorising tables without understanding equal groups.
• Place-value errors in two-digit multiplication.
• Confusing the times tables that are close (6s, 7s, 8s).
• Confusing the number of groups with the number in each group, and adding when a word problem implies repeated groups.

Pull the class back together. Ask one child to explain multiplication in their own words, pose a single check question everyone answers on a mini whiteboard, and name what you will build on next lesson.

Use the independent worksheet as the evidence. A child who can complete it accurately and explain one answer has met the objective; anyone who cannot needs the easier level and a short reteach next session.
