About Grade 1
Grade 1 turns counting into arithmetic. Children learn addition and subtraction facts within 20, understand tens and ones, count to 120, and start to tell time to the hour and half hour. Reading takes off too: most first graders move from sounding out every word to reading short books, helped by digraphs, word families and a growing sight-word bank. The worksheets here follow that path, with number bonds to 10 and 20, missing addends, tens and ones, comparing numbers, simple word problems, phonics, sight words and handwriting. If your child is finding a topic hard, the number bond and place value pages are usually the ones to go back to, because most later trouble traces to them.
What children typically learn in Grade 1
- Add and subtract within 20, and know the addition facts to 10 from memory.
- Understand two-digit numbers as tens and ones, and count to 120.
- Compare and order numbers using greater than, less than and equal to.
- Tell time to the hour and half hour, and begin to count coins.
- Read words with digraphs (sh, ch, th) and blends, plus a larger set of sight words.
- Write simple sentences with a capital letter, spaces and a full stop.
