About Grade 2
Grade 2 is the year of place value to 1,000 and of regrouping. Children add and subtract two- and three-digit numbers with carrying and borrowing, learn to count in twos, fives and tens, meet arrays as the first picture of multiplication, and work with money, time to five minutes and simple measurement. In reading they move to longer texts and answer questions about what they have read; in writing they learn to plan a short piece with a beginning, middle and end. The worksheets on this page cover all of it, with a heavy set on regrouping, skip counting and place value because those three carry the most weight in Grade 3.
What children typically learn in Grade 2
- Understand hundreds, tens and ones, and read, write and compare numbers to 1,000.
- Add and subtract within 100 with regrouping, and within 1,000 using models.
- Skip count by 2s, 5s, 10s and 100s, and use arrays to see equal groups.
- Tell time to five minutes, count money, and measure length in centimetres and inches.
- Read fluently at grade level and answer who, what, where and why questions.
- Use capital letters, full stops, commas and apostrophes in short written pieces.
