About Grade 6
Grade 6 is the bridge into middle-school maths. Ratio and rate, percentages, negative numbers and the first real algebra (expressions, one-step equations and inequalities) all begin this year, while fraction division and decimal operations are finished off. Geometry adds area of triangles and composite shapes, surface area from nets, and volume with fractional edges, and statistics introduces mean, median and range. In literacy, students analyse how authors build arguments and write essays with claims and evidence. The worksheets on this page cover the new territory (ratio, percentages, integers, expressions and equations) alongside enough fraction and decimal practice to keep the foundations solid.
What children typically learn in Grade 6
- Understand ratios and rates, and solve problems with percentages and unit rates.
- Divide fractions by fractions, and compute fluently with multi-digit decimals.
- Work with negative numbers on the number line and on the coordinate plane.
- Write and evaluate expressions with variables, and solve one-step equations and inequalities.
- Find the area of triangles and composite shapes, surface area from nets, and volume.
- Find the mean, median, mode and range of a data set, and read box plots and histograms.
