About Kindergarten
Kindergarten is the year number sense and early reading begin in earnest. Children learn to count to 20 and beyond, to see that the last number counted tells how many, to compare groups, and to read and write numerals to 10 and then 20. In literacy they learn letter sounds, blend three-sound words like cat and sun, and write their name and a few words. The worksheets on this page match that mix: counting and number recognition, number bonds to 5 and 10, shapes, patterns, letter tracing, phonics and sight words. Every maths answer key is computed in code, so it is never wrong, and every page prints cleanly or saves as a PDF.
What children typically learn in Kindergarten
- Count to 20 and beyond, and count a group of up to 20 objects accurately.
- Read and write numerals to 20 and compare two numbers as more, fewer or the same.
- Add and subtract within 10 using objects, fingers and pictures, and know the number bonds to 5.
- Name 2D and 3D shapes and describe them by sides and corners.
- Say the sound for every letter and blend simple three-sound words.
- Read a first set of sight words and write their own name and short words.

What is Kindergarten called in the UK and Australia?
US Kindergarten, for children aged about 5 to 6, lines up with Reception and the start of Year 1 in England, Foundation (Prep or Kindy in some states) in Australia, and Year 1 in New Zealand. The maths and phonics content is very similar; only the names differ.
What maths should a child know by the end of Kindergarten?
Typically: counting to 20 or 100, reading and writing numbers to 20, comparing numbers, adding and subtracting within 10 with objects or pictures, and naming basic shapes. Most curricula also expect children to know the number bonds to 5 and to be working on bonds to 10.
