What is 12 & 24 hour time?
24-hour time counts the hours from 00 to 23, so 3 pm is 15:00 (used on timetables and digital clocks). 12-hour time uses am and pm.
How to teach it
Line up 12- and 24-hour time: after midday, add 12 to the hour (1 pm = 13:00); midnight is 00:00, midday is 12:00. Practise converting both directions.
In an Australian classroom
24-hour time is standard on Australian timetables, so 3:40 pm reads as 15:40 on a bus or train board and students meet both forms in the same week.
Worked example
Common mistake
