What the test checks
Marks by strand: Number 14, Measurement 9, Algebra 3, Space 3, Probability 3 (of 32). Questions worth 2 marks need two steps or some working, so give a mark for a correct method with a slip in the final answer.
| Code | Strand | What it asks for | Practised by |
|---|---|---|---|
| AC9M6N02 | Number | Prime, composite and square numbers. Describe the properties of prime, composite and square numbers and use them to solve problems and simplify calculations. | Factors |
| AC9M6N03 | Number | Compare and order fractions. Use equivalence to compare, order and show common fractions, such as halves, thirds and quarters, on the same number line and justify the order. | Comparing Fractions |
| AC9M6N04 | Number | Add and subtract decimals. Use place value to add and subtract decimals, with digital tools where useful, checking answers with estimation and rounding. | Decimals |
| AC9M6A03 | Algebra | Number-generating algorithms. Create and use step-by-step procedures with rules to generate sets of numbers and explain the patterns that emerge. | Patterns |
| AC9M6M02 | Measurement | Area of a rectangle. Work out the formula for the area of a rectangle and use it to solve practical problems. | Geometry |
| AC9M6M03 | Measurement | Timetables and itineraries. Read and use timetables and itineraries to plan activities and work out how long events and journeys take. | 12 & 24 Hour Time |
| AC9M6SP02 | Space | Four-quadrant Cartesian plane. Locate points in all four quadrants of the Cartesian plane and describe how the coordinates change when a point moves. | Coordinates |
| AC9M6P01 | Probability | Probability scale 0 to 1. Understand that probabilities sit on a scale from 0 to 1 or 0% to 100%, and estimate probabilities as common fractions, decimals or percentages. | Probability |
What to check alongside it
A written test cannot hold every Year 6 skill. These strands need a graph, a picture, a clock face or a drawn shape, so assess them with a worksheet or a hands-on task instead:
- Statistics (AC9M6ST01, AC9M6ST02, AC9M6ST03): Year 6 statistical investigations worksheets
Using the results
- Record the score by section, not just the total. A student with full marks on number but none on elapsed time needs different help from one who lost a mark in every section.
- Sections where most of the class dropped marks are the topics to revisit in the last weeks of term or to pass on to next year's teacher, with the AC9 code attached.
- Give Version A as a pre-test in Term 3 and Version B at the end of Term 4 to see growth on the same skills without students remembering the questions.
Revise before the test
- Year 6 daily maths review: a term of mixed warm-ups on the same content descriptions.
- Year 6 maths worksheets for any topic the test shows needs more practice.
- Test builder to make a shorter topic test with its own marking key.
Frequently asked questions
What does the Year 6 end-of-year maths test cover?
8 sections and 26 questions worth 32 marks, drawn from 8 Year 6 content descriptions in the Australian Curriculum (v9). Each section heading shows its AC9 code, so you can see exactly what each part checks.
Is the marking key correct?
Yes. Every question is generated in code and its answer is computed from the same numbers, so the marking key cannot contain a guessed or mistyped answer. Mark totals are added up in code too.
Why are there three versions?
Versions A, B and C use the same sections, question types and marks with different numbers. Use one as a pre-test and another at the end of the year, or give a different version to a student sitting it late.
Does it cover every strand?
It covers Number, Measurement, Algebra, Space, Probability. Statistics questions need a graph, a picture or a drawn shape, which a plain text test cannot hold, so check those with the matching Year 6 worksheets listed on this page.
Can I change the questions?
Yes. Open the test in the test builder to change topics, the number of questions or the marks for each section, then print your own version with its own marking key.
