What is Year 9? Year 9 is the first year of secondary school in New Zealand and the start of Mathematics and Statistics Phase 4 (Years 9-10). Students are usually 13 to 14 years old. Phase 4 separates knowledge and practices into Year 9 and Year 10 expectations. Dedicated Year 9 sets now cover percentage mark-ups and discounts, GST and simple interest; expanding and simplifying expressions, solving equations and rearranging formulae; perimeter, circumference and area; and theoretical and experimental probability.
