Mixed-up multiplication grid

A mixed-up multiplication grid for quick, timed recall practice: the numbers along the top and side are shuffled, so students have to know each fact rather than count along a row. Choose 10 x 10 or 12 x 12 and one of four versions, or switch to numbers in order for building the pattern the first time.

Mixed up or in order?

Start with the grid in order: filling it shows the patterns, such as the square numbers down the diagonal, the mirror image either side of it, and the 9s whose digits add to nine. Once students know the patterns, switch to mixed up, where each box is a fact to recall. For a filled reference chart, use the multiplication chart.

Ways to use a grid

  • Weekly speed check: the same size grid each Friday, a new version each time, and students record their own time.
  • Warm-up: fill just the first three rows in two minutes, then compare with a partner.
  • Find the gaps: students shade the boxes they had to work out rather than recall, then practise those facts with the times tables maker.

Frequently asked questions

Why shuffle the numbers along the edge?

On a grid numbered 1 to 10 in order, students can fill a whole row by adding the same number again and again, which practises counting, not recall. With the headers mixed up, every box has to be recalled as a fact.

Should I use 10 x 10 or 12 x 12?

Use 10 x 10 while students are learning facts to 10 x 10 (a Year 4 goal in the Australian Curriculum), and 12 x 12 once the 11s and 12s have been taught, or for UK classes preparing for the Year 4 multiplication check.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. Tick 'Add the answer key page' before printing. Every box is the row number times the column number, calculated in code.
